Smartphone Life Hacks

Phone Lamp

You can turn your phone into a lamp by switching on the flashlight and then putting a bottle of water on top of it. The water will reflect the light which will give you that lamp like glow.

Stylus Pen

This one is so simple but it works like a charm. Cover a pen or a pencil with tinfoil and you have a stylus pen to use on your mobile screen. Using your finger limits the kind of things you can do, but with this simple little hack you can create masterpieces on your phone. You can be the next Picasso on Snapchat!

Magnifying Lens

This one seems a bit more problematic because the water drop method is tricky. People say you should place a single water drop on the lens of your phone and then you can take really close up photos, the water bubble acts like a magnifier for your lens. It works as you will see on the pictures, but you need to put the object really close to the lens and even then focusing can be difficult.

Hologram

You need four pieces of transparent hard plastic or PVC. They need to be in the form of a trapezoid that measures 6cm at the one straight side and 1cm at the other straight side, the distance between the two sides should be 3.5cm, I will include a diagram as this is a bit difficult to describe.  Once you have your four pieces cut out, you need to glue them all together. You can either cut the trapezoids out of old CD cases with a carpet knife or you can ask your local glass dealership to cut you four pieces from PVC.  An easier method is to use transparent plastic and just cut it with scissors, I will give you a template below that works well. I tried it this way and the results were very cool, especially when you turn off all the lights. Now just go over to Youtube and find some cool 3D hologram videos. Place your trapezoid on the screen in the middle of the four images , turn off the lights, press play and boom, your mind is now officially blown. There are loads of these videos on Youtube so you can play around until you find one that you love.

Smartphone Projector

This one is a bit more work, but it’s a nice party trick. You can turn your mobile phone into a projector with a simple magnifying glass and a shoebox. You will need a magnifying glass, a foam board , masking tape, carpet cutter, mobile phone, hot glue gun, ruler and of course a shoe box. First you want to cut the handle off your magnifying glass, this will make it easier to mount in the box.  Take the shoe box and make sure that it is solid, use some glue to reinforce the box if necessary.  Once the glue is dry you can trace the magnifying glass on the box and cut a hole to house your magnifying glass.

You can now go ahead and glue the magnifying glass in place, make sure that it fits nice and snug.  Let the glue dry.  You will find that the lid of the box is in the way when you pop the lid back on. Just use an exacto knife and cut a little half moon shape out to stop it from protruding over the lens.

Now you want to build a phone stand that will fit into the box. Use the foam board to make a stand that fits nicely into the box. You can play around with a design that’s most stable. Glue the stand together with the glue gun. You can stick your phone to the stand with two pieces of double sided tape. Put your phone in a cheap cover so that the double sided tape don’t make your phone sticky.

Next you want to set your phone to the highest screen brightness and then lock the screen. You must remember to place your phone upside down in the box, the image will be flipped when it goes through the lens and project normally onto the wall or screen.  You will need to focus the projection. Do this by moving the phone stand inside the box forward and backwards until the picture is focused on your screen. Now , just sit back and watch your favourite music videos and movies. You just saved a ton of money with this DIY project, so give yourself a pat on the back, get the popcorn and press play. You might as well take the rest of the day off, you deserved it you genius.

Remote Camera

Did you know that you can use the volume control on your earphones to take pictures? Just plug them in, put the phone one camera and when you want to snap just press on the volume control. Great for spying on people without them knowing it. Stalkers need hacks too you know.  I tried it and it worked , but the button is very temperamental. I don’t know if it is just my earphones that are being difficult, but like I said it worked once. Give it a try and let me know what I’m doing wrong.

Screen Cleaner

Use toothpaste to give your screen that brand new shine and it will disguise smaller scratches on your screen as well. Just squirt some toothpaste onto your screen, spread it evenly over the screen with your finger and then polish it into the screen with tissues until the screen is smooth and clear. You can also do it on the back of your phone to make it look like new again. This is a great tip if you want to sell an old phone. Spruce it up with some toothpaste and get double the price, pretty sweet idea. So, even if you never brush your teeth, go get some toothpaste to make your phone look like new again.

Phone Stand

This one is super short and sweet, but it works like a bomb. Just put a cable tie around your phone and you have a perfect stand so that you can watch your videos hands free.

You can also use your reading or sunglasses as a stand for your phone, super easy and convenient. I have one more stand idea, but I think that most of the people today will not have a clue what this is about. You use a cassette holder and turn it backwards so to speak and you have a stand for your phone. You can go nuts decorating it as well. Ask your grandparents what a cassette is, or show them the photo, it should jog their memory.

Phone Speaker

Did you know that you can use the volume control on your earphones to take pictures? Just plug them in, put the phone one camera and when you want to snap just press on the volume control. Great for spying on people without them knowing it. Stalkers need hacks too you know.  I tried it and it worked , but the button is very temperamental. I don’t know if it is just my earphones that are being difficult, but like I said it worked once. Give it a try and let me know what I’m doing wrong.

Paper Clips

These little guys can be very useful when it comes to mobile phone hacks. You can make a pretty cool DIY stand in seconds if you are in a bind. Have a look at the diagram for some inspiration and then make your own version.  You can also make a handy little tool to get that pesky memory cards out of your phone. Once again look at the picture for guidance, but basically you just strip a little piece of the plastic away and voila you are in business.

Lego

As with just about everything else, you can use Lego to make some pretty awesome stuff, we are going to focus on two things you can build for your phone    You can make a steering wheel to use for driving games on your phone. It’s going to cost you a fraction of the price of a real one and the effect is exactly the same.  You can also build the most insane phone holders for your desk, with this on you can let your imagination run wild and as soon as you get tired of it just break it down and build a new one.

Charging Station

Make a super handy charging station for your phone with an empty plastic bottle, with a few cuts here and there and some decoration you will never look for a place again to put your phone while it is charging.

Rubber band Stand

I just called it that because it rhymes, it’s not really a stand as you can see in the picture. Just two rubber bands can hold your phone in just about any position. It works great if you want to make a video outside or if there is no place to put your phone down when you want to shoot a video.

Eraser

Did you know that you can use the volume control on your earphones to take pictures? Just plug them in, put the phone one camera and when you want to snap just press on the volume control. Great for spying on people without them knowing it. Stalkers need hacks too you know.  I tried it and it worked , but the button is very temperamental. I don’t know if it is just my earphones that are being difficult, but like I said it worked once. Give it a try and let me know what I’m doing wrong.

Colored Lens

You can stick clear cellotape over your lens or flashlight to give you a cool effect on your photos or just give your flashlight a different color, but there is an even better application for a bit of tape and markers. Stick cellotape over your flashlight and color it red with a marker, then stick another piece directly on to top of that one and color it blue. You now have your very own blue light just like the ones they use on CSI to detect all kind of bodily fluids if you know what I mean, or you can just have fun with it by shining on neon . I would suggest you stick to the latter.

Screen Protector

Sometimes you need to put your phone in a handbag or anywhere the screen might get scratched, to avoid this take a cheap phone cover and place it the wrong way around on your phone. Check the photo if you don’t understand. Your screen will never get scratched again. It works great in golf and tennis bags for instance where you need your phone close, but you’re not using it and there are lots of things in the bag that can scratch your screen.
